Transforming Warehouse Shelving to an Automated System

Customer’s Journey: Warehouse Shelving to Semi-Automation

Given the challenging demands of warehouse storage, Prestige has developed an expertise in leading customers through the process of taking traditional static operations and transforming them into state-of-the-art systems. In an ongoing project, Prestige is working with a customer who operates a ~3,200 square foot two-level shelving system. It features robust Hallowell closed shelving, capable of holding 600 lbs. per level, with 48” W x 24” D shelves.

The lower level consists of 227 sections with 5 shelves each, and the upper level has 241 sections with 6 shelves, providing ample storage for a mix of products. Equipped with two sets of external U-shaped stairs and pallet landings on both sides, the system has provided efficient access and operation to the customer for many years. The durable ResinDek Gray flooring has not only enhanced the system’s longevity but has also given the warehouse a professional and clean look.

Goals and Solution

While the two-level warehouse shelving system has been an excellent solution, the customer approached Prestige in order to address the following questions:

  • How can we gain additional bulk storage considering anticipated warehouse growth?
  • How can we increase throughput?
  • How can we ensure the right item is being picked every time?
  • How can we provide a more ergonomic system for our employees to operate?
  • How can we enhance security around our highly classified parts?

Given the ~37 feet of clearance within the facility, and the myriad of benefits they bring, Prestige ultimately recommended Modula Vertical Lift Modules (VLMs) to replace the customer’s two-level warehouse shelving system. Prestige and the customer have partnered to bring this concept into reality. At the end of the day, two VLMs will help transform the 3,500 square foot footprint into a 725 square foot space (~80% space savings) and will repurpose one FTE for other roles within the warehouse.

Disassembly & Repurpose of Existing System

The first step in preparing for the new VLMs is disassembly of the existing set-up, and Prestige’s internal installation team has been contracted to disassemble the shelving and mezzanine combination. Being that the system is in excellent condition, Prestige was able to acquire the full structure from the customer and add it to the used inventory portfolio.

At Prestige, we’re committed to offering cost-effective and efficient solutions that enhance warehouse spaces. This used two-level warehouse shelving system will provide the following benefits:

1. Cost Efficiency

A used warehouse shelving system can dramatically reduce expenditures compared to purchasing a brand-new mezzanine. The lower price point makes it an attractive option for businesses aiming to enhance their storage or workspace without stretching their budget. These savings provide an opportunity to further refine operational capabilities.

2. Quick and Easy Installation

Another significant advantage that this system will bring is the speed and ease of installation. Since this system is pre-engineered and ready to be reassembled, it can be installed much quicker than ordering and fabricating a new structure. This quick turnaround is invaluable for businesses looking to expand their operational space without significant downtime or disruption to their daily operations, providing quicker access to additional storage, manufacturing, or office use.

3. Environmental Sustainability

The used warehouse shelving system also aligns with sustainable business practices. By repurposing the existing structure, businesses can reduce their environmental footprint. Manufacturing a new shelving / mezzanine structure would require a substantial amount of materials and energy, contributing to greater carbon emissions. In contrast, the re-use of this structure minimizes the demand for raw materials and the energy consumption associated with production and transportation, supporting a commitment to sustainability.

Prestige is actively looking for a group who can leverage the benefits this used two-level warehouse shelving system brings.
